What’s working?
It’s easy for us to focus on what we don’t like in life. Things may not go as we may wish. We can feel disappointed, angry, sad, or resentful.
Less often, we may place our attention on what is working in our lives. If something is going just fine, we can be liable to take it for granted. It’s been working, why wouldn’t it keep working?
This is where a dose of gratitude for the small every day boons can help adjust our perspective. We likely have heat, water, food, shelter, and companionship of some sort.
We may be graced with enough resources to choose what we eat and drink and how we spend our leisure time (having leisure time in and of itself is a blessing). And these blessings persist in our lives day after day, often with us barely registering their presence.
Taking an average day, we can see how many things go right:
- We get out of bed and are healthy enough to do so.
- We have indoor plumbing and running water to clean and refresh ourselves.
- We get out of bed and are healthy enough to do so.
- We have indoor plumbing and running water to clean and refresh ourselves.
- We have a choice of clothing.
- We’re in a heated or cooled home environment.
- We have electricity to light our way and power appliances that help prepare our meals.
- We have food to eat and clean water to drink.
- We have a livelihood, whether it is from work or savings.
- We can locomote on foot, by bicycle, public transportation, or personal vehicle.
I could continue on. The point is that in any given day more, much more, goes on that is good or right. There is far less bad or wrong.
Today’s message invites me to celebrate the myriad of small blessings I have. When I focus on what I do have, I feel abundant and am contented.
Please reflect and share. What small blessings are with you today?
