Create yourself happy

Most of us are unhappy at least some of the time. And it isn’t perhaps realistic to always be untroubled, content, and joyful. But it’s wonderful when we have far more good days than bad.

We may struggle to figure out how to get from unhappy to happy. How do we know what steps to take to get there?

There are a few basic things we can do to get there. First, we can picture ourselves being happy and grateful for a good life. We can imagine these feelings with intensity and detail.

Then we can be grateful for what good there is our lives right now. Something, however small, is going right for us. We can summon up enthusiastic gratitude for that blessing. Gratitude paves the way for more of whatever we appreciate.

Finally, we can identify activities, actions, and mindsets that have made us happy in the past. And we can start doing them with some frequency right now. Even if we think we don’t have the time/resources/freedom to do so, we can simply begin to do things we love in small, regular doses. What we enjoy helps make us a magnet for more good feelings.

Today’s message reminds me that now is all I have. When I commit to making myself happy and healthy in the moment, my life will tend to be overall happy.
