Most things aren’t urgent.

Situations can make us feel pressured to act. And in some cases, we do need to take prompt measures—safety issues, critical health conditions, time-sensitive financial situations. But mostly things can wait without many negative effects.

However, we may feel urgency due to an emotional component. We may be afraid, harbor guilt or shame, or be influenced by others. This is when a simple question may help clarify things. “What’s the worst thing that could happen if I take no immediate action?” This can help us separate truly urgent situations from ones that are simply emotionally fraught.

Today’s message reminds me that taking a pause to assess a scenario is almost always helpful. When I respond based on reason and intuition rather than emotional reactions, I have better outcomes.
