Notes From The Furlough: Day 83

Freedom is having nothing in your way.

Please discuss. How does this play out in life?

I’ll start us out. So often in life, it seems like there are obstacles to getting where we want to go. Financial constraints, limits on free time, familial responsibilities, societal pressures and prejudices: all these can hamper our ability to do as we choose. It can be frustrating and saddening to have a dream or goal and feel boxed in and unable to pursue it fully.

Today’s message invites me to muse on the nature of obstacles. All those listed above are external factors, but what about internal roadblocks? I can plan around external pressures by having a budget, scheduling my time, discussing needs with my family, acknowledging the effect of society on me and identifying actions I might take in response. Internal barriers can be slippery and elusive to deal with; I may not even be aware they exist. As I prepare to find out the disposition of my job later this morning, I’m called to examine what internal factors might be in my way. Whether I’m called back to work, released from my job, or furloughed further, my life landscape will be shifting to some degree. When I know my job’s future, it’s time to sort through any belief, though or emotional barriers inside me.

How about you? How do you handle internal limitations?
