NOTES FROM THE AWARENESS: 432

Comparison is often destructive.

Please reflect and share. How does this play out for you?

We’re taught to analyze in making decisions. We weigh the pros and cons of possibilities, trying to choose the best option for us. Our process involves determining on thing is better than another.

In deciding one alternative has more merit, we assess that another is lacking. In this way, we learn to judge and find things wanting. If we end up with what we’ve determined is a lesser option, we will likely end up feeling dissatisfied with the result.

While there can be benefits to comparison in decision-making, the habit of comparison tends to generalize into other aspects of life. We evaluate our bodies and appearances with others’, compare one child’s talents to another’s, prefer one experience to a different one. Much of our lives can involve wishing for what we do not have, due to comparison.

Today’s message reminds me to find good in what is right now. When I appreciate the benefit of the moment—who I am, what I have, what my circumstances are—I can enjoy the present more completely. By not comparing, I increase the perceived value of what I have.

How about you? How do you feel about comparison?
