Tidy up inside and out
It’s easy to accumulate stuff. We buy things and hold onto them, perhaps even when they cease to have value or meaning. We may remember the initial cost and be reluctant to discard something we think of as an investment. Or we may have an emotional stake in items we received as gifts.
While we may not need to go full Marie Kondo, we likely all can benefit from a paring down of material possessions. Nate Hall and I have been attempting this lightly for the past couple of years. Each week we try to rid ourselves of two items each. Some weeks it’s more.
While we have certainly simplified out physical life some, it is somewhat daunting to see how much stuff we still retain. It’s a cautionary tale for us regarding accumulation without discernment.
The same process goes on inside us with issues and emotions. We may deal with a challenging situation at personal cost. This causes us to be invested in the issue. We perpetuate the feelings long after the initial situation is passed. But the feelings stay stuck inside us cluttering up our internal landscape and complicating things.
Today’s message reminds me that in either case, internal or external clutter, a tidying up process can help simplify my life. When I have less to deal with and manage, I’m freer to pursue things that bring me happiness.
Please reflect and share. When was the last time you did a good personal tidying?
