It isn’t about you; it’s all about you.
From time to time, we’re all treated in ways we’d prefer not to be. We feel hurt or disrespected, perhaps even victimized. It’s not fun.
It’s hard to realize, but others’ motivations for treating us badly aren’t about us. Their reasons for doing so are about what is inside of them. They may be in pain and are lashing out.
If we take this examination a little deeper, it gets a little trickier. Often how we’re treated by others is a reflection of how we feel inside of ourselves.
If we have a negative sense of self, we will attract situations to reinforce a poor self-image. Unless we love ourselves, we may not be truly loved by anyone else.
Knowing this, it’s important to realize that honoring ourselves, healthy boundaries to respect us, and self-care are the best route to being treated well by others. As inside, so outside.
Today’s message reminds me not to take any ill treatment personally. Instead, I may wish to ask myself why I believe I might deserve such behavior. When I truly love myself, others’ opinions and behavior become less important to me.
How about you? How do you handle being treated badly?
