NOTES FROM THE AWARENESS: 379

When we think we’re awake, we’re mostly dreaming.

Please reflect and share. How does this play out in life?

We tend to think of the waking hours world as the real world and the sleeping hours one as the dream world. We usually place more focus and credence on waking experiences than on dreaming ones. After all, our conscious mind perceives things more clearly, right?

Our conscious mind represents a platform of perception which filters input based on past experience. When we encounter something unknown, we likely recognize or attempt to categorize it as something already known. This helps us deal with the stress of the possibly unsafe unfamiliar. It can also lead to misinterpretation.

The dream state is the realm of the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind registers all stimuli, whether or not we also notice them consciously. In this way, it has access to a more complete version of reality than the conscious mind does. When we dream, our subconscious mind generates our dreaming experience from this more unqualified pool of information and sensation. Our dreams—whether or not we understand them—have the potential to bring us closest to the real.

Today’s message reminds me to pay closer attention to the content and messages of my dreams. If I rely totally on my waking perceptions, I’m missing out on valuable insights. My dreams are more real than waking life.

How about you? Do you pay attention to your dreams?
