Debunk your fears

Out of our deepest fears come our greatest successes. We only need to recognize that they are simply fears and have no meaning. That in itself is a success, a great success.

Fear is a universal human experience. All of us at some time or another experience fear. Most of us struggle with periods of fear every day of our lives. Sometimes when we are afraid we know what is frightening us and sometimes we don’t. Either way, we usually know we are feeling fear.

Fear makes us really uncomfortable. Sometimes we’re so busy coping with the emotion that we don’t feel able to think or act. We simply feel fear. Fear immobilizes us and sucks the joy out of life.

Fear usually arises as resistance to potential change. We don’t want things to alter in a way that we believe will make our lives worse. We’re afraid that circumstances we see as outside of our control will cause us to be unhappy.

Fear is built on assumptions. We assume something will happen. We assume that something will negatively impact us. And we assume our natural reaction to that something will be unhappiness. All these assumptions are based on our perceptions of the past, whether our past or someone else’s. They are not about what is happening to us right now.

All these assumptions are projections. We project what do not want to occur onto the future and allow ourselves to feel fear about that projection. The projection is made up; we have created it in our mind. It has no basis in what is occurring in the immediate present. Our fear, built on assumptions and projections, has no firm basis in reality. It is an illusion.

When we are in the grip of fear, it may seem difficult to remember that it is not real. But if we are willing to do so, we take away the power over ourselves that we have granted to fear. We change our role from that of victim to that of initiator. We give back to ourselves the ability to make choices and take action. We remove the obstacles we’ve created to our success. We take responsibility for our own happiness. We are free.

Let’s take a few minutes to connect with our inner divinity—our sharing within—to explore freedom from fear. We will begin by allowing our breath to slow and become deep and even. We will see our sharing within as a ball of golden light in the center of our chest. With each inhalation, the sphere of light becomes denser and brighter. With each exhalation, golden light flows throughout our body and into our surroundings. When we feel a sense of calm, clarity, and certainty, we will know that we are in conscious connection with our sharing within.

We will think back to when we were a very small child. What was our greatest fear? Perhaps it was a monster under the bed. Perhaps it was a ghost in the closet. Perhaps it was death at the hands of an evil person. Whatever it was, we will allow that fear to temporarily resurrect itself so we can feel it completely.

We will breathe golden light from our sharing within into the childhood fear and remind ourselves that what we feared wasn’t real. From the perspective of now, it is easy to see there was no monster under the bed or ghost in the closet. We grew up to adulthood without being murdered. As a child, we were safe from the unreality we feared even though we did not realize it at that time. We’ll take a moment to allow the child within us to feel safe, secure, and free from the past fear.

Now we will think of our current greatest fear. Perhaps we are afraid of succumbing to ill health. Perhaps we fear not having enough. Perhaps we’re afraid of never being loved. We’ll take a moment to allow ourselves to feel our present fear totally.

Now we will focus on our immediate situation. Perhaps our body is comfortable in our surroundings. Perhaps we’ve recently eaten and have a nicely full belly. Perhaps a friend or co-worker is being kind. We will allow ourselves to recognize that in some small way, what we fear for the future is untrue in the present.

We will breathe golden light from our sharing within into our current fear and say to ourselves, “What I fear is not real in this moment. I am willing to be happy in the present. I am grateful for what I enjoy right now.” We will congratulate ourselves for choosing current happiness. This is a great success!
