NOTES FROM THE AWARENESS: 593

Opposition begets opposition.

Please reflect and share. How does this play out for you?

Many of us are dismayed by the fractures in our society. The political divide, social injustice and unrest, vaccine controversy, climate change debate—there is plenty of evidence of opposing sides in the news. Regardless of which side of an issue we’re on, we likely struggle to understand and related to folks who hold differing viewpoints.

One thing is certain. The more we oppose those with different beliefs, the more they will be come entrenched in their stance and the more tensions escalate. Opposition begets opposition. And in extreme cases, violence begets violence. We need to find non-violent, non-oppositional ways to relate to each other that respect and promote freedom, equality, well-being, and safety for all of us.

Today’s message asks me to be aware of where I may consciously or unconsciously generate opposition. I will be better served by focusing on what I want to support rather than what I oppose. Peace doesn’t arise from conflict.

How about you? What’s your take on opposition?
