Notes From The Furlough: Day 60

Blessings come in many disguises.

Please discuss. How does this play out in life?

I’ll start us out. The state of our Union looks troubled right now: virus pandemic, economy disrupted and shaky, high unemployment, political and ideological division, civil unrest and racial tension. All these seem to be a blight or curse upon us. And they are; make no mistake, there is vast room for improvement in the normal course of life. For this very same reason, these problems are also blessings. They clearly point out where we can improve, help us envision something better, and provide an opportunity to heal our collective lives.

On a personal level, my life is a microcosm of what is going on in our country. I’m sheltering at home to protect my health, hoping my unemployment claim will be approved, not working at present, feeling polarized by current events. These are all challenges for me, but they also hold hidden benefits. Isolation has prompted introspection and personal healing. Lack of regular funds has spurred radical budgeting and deeper awareness of needs versus wants and financial habits. No regular employment has led me to take a long, hard look at what I want and what makes me happy. The discomfort of polarized emotions has triggered examination of the beliefs and thoughts underlying.

While my circumstances would seem to be limiting, they’ve resulted in greater freedom—from regular habits and ingrained thoughts and emotions—and the clarity to make conscious choices. I’m grateful for the gifts!

How about you? How has your current situation brought about unexpected benefits?
